What are Horse Flies?
The horse fly is a species of fly that is infamous for being an annoyance to horses and other animals, which is probably how it got its common name. Horse flies are often found close to bodies of water, which are breeding grounds and where animal hosts are most prevalent, in both suburban and rural regions.
Type of Flies
Horseflies have a gray or blackish body and are 10 to 30 millimeters long. They usually have wings lacking dark areas.
Risks Associated with Horse Flies
Painful Sting
Horseflies have powerful, cutting mouthparts that slice through skin like scissors to get the blood. In contrast to a mosquito or a tick bite, a horse fly bite hurts a lot.
Allergic Reaction
Horse flies bites are painful and can cause allergic reactions, itchiness, redness and swelling around the bite area.
Open Garbage Is Their Buffet
The last thing you want to see is a bunch of winged nuisances turning your garbage can into their condo.
Transmitting Diseases
Horse flies transmit several pathogenic viruses, bacteria, and parasites that can cause diseases in humans, livestock and wild animals.
